THE FAMILY WE CHOOSE
(Seeking Representation)

Injury and her father’s untimely death force twenty-five-year-old Toni Murray to face the family she disowned and heal more than her broken body. Home—if she could call it that—in Central Massachusetts for the first time in seven years for her father’s funeral, Toni is desperate to escape the third-floor apartment of her so-called family’s triple decker and get back to her dance career. But a hip injury has left her too broke and too hobbled to make it out the door. Instead, she’s stuck living with her three smothering uncles—her father’s closest friends who helped raise her and who lie to her about everything: her mother, her father’s cancer, and now her father’s girlfriend—news to Toni—who shows up the day after his funeral to collect her belongings. With the help of her former dance teacher, Toni begins to rehabilitate her hip and her bank account while reckoning with her past. Her progress is hindered, however, by helping her dance teacher open a new ballet school, squelching feelings for her ex-boyfriend, avoiding his scary girlfriend, and keeping her uncles at arm’s length. After reconnecting with her former bestie, Toni learns that she made at least one terrible mistake seven years ago that cost her the love of her life and almost that bestie. What else could she be wrong about? Haunted by grief and guilt, confused by stories about her mother being a scam artist, and determined to learn the truth, Toni uncovers one final secret her father and uncles have been keeping that changes everything she thought she knew about herself and her family.
